Styling & Care Tips for Curly Hair

Step 1: Detangle
Before washing, gently detangle your hair. Your fingers can often be your best detangling tool. A wide tooth comb with flexible teeth is also a good option. Never use a stiff brush for detangling or for styling. Brushes tend to create friction that can cause frizziness in curly hair.

Step 2: Choose the Right Cleansing & Moisturizing Duo
A gentle, sulfate free shampoo and super moisturizing conditioner can work wonders for curls. Redken’s Curvaceous collection is particularly good, as it is formulated specifically to deliver exactly what curly hair craves. Curvaceous Cream Shampoo gently cleanses your hair without stripping away natural oils, something that curls need to stay healthy. When followed with Curvaceous Conditioner, the results are magnified. The conditioner quenches your locks with intense hydration and can be left in for extra curl definition and softness instead of being entirely rinsed out after shampooing. It is perfect for all curl types whether you have Botticelli, corkscrew curls, ringlets, or gentle waves.

Pro Tip:
If your hair is baby fine or thinning, apply conditioner only to the mid and lower sections of your hair and avoid the scalp area. If your hair is very curly, coarse, or thick, apply conditioner all over. The curlier your hair is, the more moisture it needs in order to stay hydrated and healthy. You can also apply a leave-in conditioner so that your hair stays moisturized all day.

Step 3: Dry Gently
After washing, use a soft cloth or towel to gently blot your hair dry. Avoid wringing or twisting your hair, and never vigorously scrub or rub your hair when towel drying. This can break fragile strands and damage the hair cuticle. In most cases, your curls will look their best when allowed to air dry naturally after styling products are applied. Blow dryers can sap precious moisture from your locks, leaving the ends dry and more likely to break. If you opt for blow drying, use an attachment on your dryer to diffuse the air stream, and use the lowest heat setting possible.

Step 4: Opt for Styling Products Made for Curly Hair
Styling products that work well for straight hair types many times do not have the same effect for curls. Curly hair needs more moisture than any other hair texture, and many products on the market contain high amounts of alcohol, which can dehydrate your strands, strip moisture away, and lead to frizz. For best results, choose products that are created specifically for curls and waves. If you have not found the perfect styling products for your hair, try Curvaceous the next time you visit us.
